KSC Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Program
AED Program Overview
Every KSC employee should become familiar with the NASA AED Program. AED units are available in many facilities and the number is expected to grow. Although the Philips Medical HeartStart OnSite is the most prevalent AED at KSC/CCAFS, there may be different AEDs in different facilities. AEDs are designed to assure “ease of use.” The AED “ease of use” permits the utilization of different AEDs with the same training background. i.e., all AED makes/models possess both audio and visual cues to aid the responder in its correct application. Every employee is encouraged to assist anyone who is in need.
As a member of the KSC Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) Program, the company responsible for the AED must have a documented AED Program and an AED Point-of-Contact for each of their AEDs. The documented AED Program must include a maintenance plan for the AED (there is one on this website that can be used), location of each AED, a training plan for all authorized users of the AED’s, and an incident response plan.
Any use of the AED (defined as attaching the AED pads to a person’s chest [and turning on the AED, if make/model requires this step] – whether or not a shock is delivered – is considered use of an AED) must be reported to the KSC AED Program Director or Program Coordinator as soon as possible. If necessary, the KSC Employee Assistance Program counselors may be asked to aid in the post-incident debrief.
All training supplies, equipment, and maintenance of the AED are the responsibility of the requesting company, however; contact the Aerospace Medicine & Occupational Health Branch first, as some supplies may be available
